A BRAUNTON hairdresser is preparing for a double celebration as she marks the golden anniversary of both her business and marriage.
Janet Manix established Manix Hair Design on March 21, 1966 – just two weeks after moving to the village with her husband Ed following their marriage.
“I came from Plymouth originally and when I met Ed he was a relief rep and they assigned him to this area,” Janet said.
“I worked in Paignton for six years doing my apprenticeship and it was my father who bought the two shops and gave one to me.”
Although Janet, now 71, initially worked in the shop on her own, the business quickly grew in popularity. As a result, within the first few weeks of setting up, Janet took on her first employee and by the end of the year the salon had several members of staff.
Now 50 years later, the salon still has five hairdressers, including Janet’s daughter Nina, who has been there for the past 23 years.
“It’s like anything, I thought if I could make it 20 years that would be good,” Janet said. “I never expected to be doing it for 50 years.”
Although she has now taken a back seat in the salon, Janet still pops in to help cover staff illness and holidays, saying she loves seeing all her former customers.
“And it’s always good for a natter,” she added.
“I still love going in there. We lived in the flat above it for 37 years so I have a lot of happy memories from the building.”
After going on holiday with her family to celebrate her golden wedding anniversary, Janet is now making preparations to mark the 50th anniversary of the hair salon.
She is inviting all former staff and customers to the salon on March 21 where a celebratory reception will be taking place between midday and 2pm.
“It will be nice to see some of the old girls,” she said.
“When they worked for me we were like a family, they are all very close to my heart.”
