More and more people are deciding not to go abroad for their holidays this year, instead preferring to stay at home and avoid the cost and stress of travelling. The credit crunch has affected a lot of people and many are finding themselves short of money to spend on luxuries like holidays. The recession combined with the current strength of the euro against the pound, means it’s not surprising that the number of UK holidaymakers choosing to visit traditionally popular European destinations like Spain and Portugal has plummeted.

In fact, according to figures released by the European Commission 48 per cent of Europeans are intending to spend their holidays in their own countries this year, that’s five per cent higher than in 2008. Those who are still planning to travel abroad are spending much more time shopping around for the cheapest deals, and booking in advance on the internet to save on cost.

The credit crunch may be bad news for the Spanish tourism industry, but for UK destinations like Wales it could be just the thing they’ve been waiting for. Not only are many UK holidaymakers looking at destinations closer to home this year, but the weak pound could bring in more visitors from mainland Europe as well.

Wales is the perfect destination in the UK with a huge variety of things to see and do and places to stay, from hotels to camping to rented flats and holiday cottages. The scenery is stunning, from the world famous mountains and valleys to the beautiful coastline which has been awarded with no less than 43 blue flag awards for water quality, cleanliness and safety. There is no shortage of options including garden breaks wales, walking, exploring or activity holidays, including abseiling, water sports and ‘coasteering’ right along the stunning coast. So if you’re looking for a UK destination this summer whether you’re planning a family holiday, romantic getaway or a short breaks Wales could be the choice for you.

I think most people don’t realise just how strenuous surfing can be and fitness needed to be a great surfer. Professional riders have fitness levels that most people can only dream of and this is something you only realise once you are in the water and trying it yourself. Your muscles are worked incredibly hard as you take the board into the surfing launch zone and when riding a lot of energy is expended also. So if you are going to want to get signed by the likes of Roxy, Rip Curl and Animal Clothing you’re going to have build those muscles. But which are the main muscles that get worked during surfing and which should you be training most?

Deltoids These in simple terms are yout shoulder muscles and take a big hit during a surf session. When you are lying flat on the board and rotating your arms repeatedly to paddle out, your deltoid group is providing around 70% of the power. Now consider that most surfers spend 60-70% of their time paddling and you realise just how much work your shoulders do

Trapezius These are muscles that make up the upper back. They are also involved with the surfboards progressive movement when you are paddling out, but are called into action more when you are ‘popping’ up on the board. This requires explosive strength so you need to work with heavy weights and a fast repetitions to get these muscles in shape

Abs and core muscles These are core to you performing well on the board as these are your stabilising muscles. It is all very well have the skill to surf but without the core muscles in good condition you will fatigue very quickly and will not be able to stay upright. There is not really any element of surfing that does not called upon these muscles so they should be your primary focus. Use a core-stability ball or Pilates techniques to build these up.

Cardiovascular fitness should also be included in your surf training and there are plenty of second hand bikes that you can pick up and use to ride to the beach to help with this

Teaching associations and unions have responded to proposed budget cuts in schools and colleges by suggestion strike action may be taken. Lots of people are understandable upset by the announcement and proposed strikes have been speculated.

The cut was announced after more teenagers than first predicted applied to stay on in education. Rather than celebrate the increasing desire of students to stay on a school or college, Labour have announced that there will be a £200m shortfall in funding this year. This will likely put the future of as many as 50,000 young adults in jeopardy, lead to a cut in school bursaries, and will mean that many will have to look for paid work instead. Given that the current economic climate is high unstable, this worries many in the education sector.

The National Union of Teachers have spoken out and called the cuts “an absolute disgrace”. A ‘lost generation’ is what they think will be the result of this, simular to the situation with school leavers in the 1980’s. “This would not happen in independent or indeed bording schools and should not happen in the state system” they said. The cut came about as a miscalculated estimate on the percentage of young people who would choice to continue on to colleges, sixth forms or paid training schemes. Many of these places have now received around 4% less money than they first thought and will be forced to save the money by scrapping courses and possibly teaching jobs. The NUT annual conference in Wales is where the issue was first addressed and lots of speakers voted for strikes at the educational institutions that were affected

A clear acknowledgement of the problem has been made by Ed Balls, the Schools Secretary, who has said schools face a dilemma about whether or not they can fund college students this year. He claims that the cause for the rise in higher education program applications is down to the poor job market putting people off entering work. He has made the point that due to the recession, their are not as many job opportunities out their for school leavers and so many are deciding to stay on

There are a lot of things out there to do to help brighten up the garden for both the wildlife and for you and your family.

Wildlife

There are so many different ways that animal lovers can bring animals into their gardens. One of the best things you can do which don’t prove to be that expensive is start to get in bird feeders and bird boxes along with the bird bath. One of the really cool things is to watch as the birds eat, drink and breed in the safety of your garden. One of the really good things is that once you have a family that have made the box their home they will often come back the next year.

If you are finding yourself with a bit of money spare and are seriously looking at improving the garden you should really look into getting a pond as this will start to bring in some of the bigger animals like the fox. Of course many people hate the idea of a fox in the garden whereas others think that it is great so it is up to you really.

Family

There are so many things that you should be looking out for when it comes to the family and the garden and they can really help boost the fun that can be had in the outdoors. My personal favourite has to be the 8ft trampoline but of course there are many others out there like outdoor play equipment and swing sets and getting one of these could really fill those summer months bit a bit of fun.

These can also be enjoyed together as a family thing, putting up things for the birds and jumping around on the trampoline is something that the whole family can have fun with!

So there you have it

The common hot water bottle seems to do the opposite to some furry mammals, who at this time of the year are beginning to hibernate. It remains out of sight in some cupboard, or under the bed until it senses the first signs of winter. Then, voila! There it is at the bottom of the bed

Of course this is nonsense, but I just wanted to highlight that for most of us a hot water bottle is an aesthetically-challenged object. I can’t even remember the last time that I actually bought one. it would have probably been a last minute Christmas present for an elderly relative.

We seem, as a nation, to still be inextricably linked to them. It was George Mikes, a British author of Hungarian descent, who once poked fun at us as a nation. In his hilarious book ‘How to be an Alien’ he remarks “Continental people have sex lives, the English have hot water bottles’. In a way, there may have been truth in the joke, especially thinking back to when the designs were dour and bland. A typical continental person’s view of the English and sex is probably reflected in these words.

But wait a minute! Many things have changed since then. Could it be possible that these things have become ’sexy’? I found this site the other day that stocks styles and shapes that are quite different. If ever I was looking for something slightly quirky or different that couldn’t be found in the high street, this site would be the first place to look. They have everything here, from buddha statues to retro telephones, and most things in between!

If you are primarily interested in hot water bottles, my favourites are those with a cushion shape, like the ‘Giraffe cushion’. All of my favourites looked extremely comfortable and probably had therapeutic values, particularly for suffers of neck and lower back pain. For the environmentally conscious, they are also manufactured from recyclable material and are guaranteed not to fade.

For most people having a heater that will work at the flick of a switch is very important when the cold winter months kick in. There are a few different types of heater which you can use for this purpose and some have more benefits than others. It used to be that stand alone gas or electric heaters were the heaters of choice for most people but nowadays many people prefer oil heaters. Oil heaters offer many benefits that other heaters simply do not.

Night time use of electric heaters is a major safety concern which puts many people off. They can cause an excess amount of worry as they have been known to short circuit and cause fires. It would be inadvisable to use these heaters at night because of this reason. Electric heaters also consume a lot of electricity making them very energy inefficient. Gas heaters are also unsafe for night heating due to the fact that they have an open flame and there is a risk that gas could run out.

Oil heaters on the other hand are less likely to cause electrical fires as they only use a quarter of the amount of electricity that an electric heater would. This is because an oil heater works by slowly heating the oil inside the heater and once the desired temperature has been reached the heater will switch off and only come back on when the temperature in the room drops again. There is usually an auto shut off feature with many oil heaters which would work in the event that over heating occurs or if the heater is accidentally knocked over.

With oil heaters the air does not dry out or become stuffy. This means that breathing at night is much better. You can also control the temperature of the heater. This allows you to use the heater to really heat a room or to just take the chill off. Because of the energy efficiency of oil heaters you may find that your heating bills are reduced.

Some people spend a lot of money heating their homes in the winter. Fuel such as electricity and gas show no signs of coming down in price. Clever people are switching to heating oil as a fuel though. And when this happens they have to ensure the tanks re always full of cheap heating oil ensuring they can always heat their home in winter.
